  • Trent Alexander-Arnold settled the Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo debate with controversial answer – Liverpool

Trent Alexander-Arnold settled the Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo debate with controversial answer – Liverpool

Trent Alexander-Arnold has already made his feelings clear on the Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo debate.

Alexander-Arnold, 26, has been the subject of mass media and fan attention in recent weeks and finally announced on Sunday (May 4) that he will not be renewing his contract at his boyhood club Liverpool with his current deal set to expire at the end of June 2025.

Real Madrid seems his likely destination with The Athletic reporting on Monday (May 5) that “Alexander-Arnold is expected to join Real Madrid as a free agent, with sources in Spain” suggesting that a “six-year agreement” is close to being finalised.

In a statement, the 26-year-old cited how taking himself out of his “comfort zone” was part of the reason for his departure from the Premier League champions.

The likes of Eden Hazard, Steven McManaman, Gareth Bale and Michael Owen have all traded life in England for a new challenge in the Spanish capital over the past three decades – although the most high-profile switch was Ronaldo’s 2009 transfer from Manchester United to Los Blancos.

And despite Alexander-Arnold seeming likely to follow in Ronaldo’s footsteps from the Premier League to La Liga, he admitted that “Messi is the best player of all time” during an interview with Oh My Goal in 2019.

In another interview with the Mirror back in 2024, Alexander-Arnold doubled down on his choice, he explained: “It has to be Messi for me, the best player I’ve played, for me the best player that’s ever played the game.”

The right-back added: “I never watched [Diego] Maradona, so I don’t know… to imagine anyone better than what I’ve been able to see… my brain doesn’t comprehend it, there’s no way anyone can be better.”

He continued: “There’s just a different feeling playing against him than I’ve ever felt with anyone else.

“You’re always on red alert when the ball’s near him, I think it’s very rare for a player to have that kind of feeling, to put that feeling into other players. So for that reason, I have to say him.

“For me, I think in many, many aspects of the game, he’s probably the best at any given moment. He can almost do what he wants on a football pitch, so yeah, for that reason, he’s the best.”

Despite admitting that Messi is the greatest of all time, Alexander-Arnold still has a huge amount of respect for Ronaldo, and so he should given the fact that the Portuguese is Real’s highest-ever goalscorer and greatest player.

“With Ronaldo being one of the greats, probably one of the best players ever, it’s going to be an honour to hopefully play against him,” Alexander-Arnold said ahead of the 2018 Champions League final, which Liverpool lost 3-1 against Madrid.

“You have to admit he’s [Cristiano Ronaldo] an unbelievable player and he’s done exceptional things in the game,” he added. “The numbers that he does season in, season out are absolutely unbelievable.

“I know a lot about him and the likes of Messi because I watched them on YouTube growing up. You always watch those type of players. But you’ve just got to focus on the game and, if he’s a direct opponent, you have to see what the strengths and weaknesses are and use them to your advantage.”

  • Barcelona forward matches Cristiano Ronaldo’s Champions League record in Inter defeat

Barcelona forward matches Cristiano Ronaldo’s Champions League record in Inter defeat

Barcelona may have fallen short in the UEFA Champions League semi-final against Inter Milan, but Raphinha ended the campaign with a personal milestone that will go down in history.

The Brazilian forward equalled Cristiano Ronaldo’s long-standing record for the most goal involvements in a single Champions League season — a total of 21.

Although the second leg was not Raphinha’s best game overall, he showed determination and never stopped pushing forward, and his effort paid off midway through the match.

After receiving a sharp pass from Pedri, Raphinha charged into the box and took a shot with his left foot.

Inter’s goalkeeper, Yann Sommer, managed to save the first attempt, but Raphinha quickly reacted and fired the rebound into the net with his right foot.

That goal not only gave Barcelona hope of a comeback, but it also secured Raphinha’s place in Champions League history.

Securing a place in history books

The goal was his 13th in the competition this season, along with 8 assists, bringing his total to 21 goal involvements. Only Cristiano Ronaldo had achieved this before, during the 2013-14 season.

For Raphinha, this is a huge personal achievement and a clear sign of the major impact he has had on Barcelona’s European campaign.

Raphinha’s overall season at Barcelona has been nothing short of spectacular. In all competitions, he has played 53 matches, scored 32 goals, and provided 22 assists.

That’s 54 goal contributions, averaging more than one goal involvement per game. Whether scoring or setting up his teammates, Raphinha has been one of Barça’s most decisive players this year.

With their Champions League journey now over, Barcelona will turn their full attention to La Liga.

While the team may have missed out on Europe’s top prize, Raphinha’s record-breaking season offers plenty of hope and excitement for what’s to come.

Georgina Rodriguez Channels Princess Diana at the Met Gala 2025

Georgina Rodríguez made her Met Gala debut in New York on Monday, May 5, with a slip dress that recalled Princess Diana‘s legendary 1996 look from her first turn on fashion’s biggest night.

It marked the only time that the late Princess of Wales (or any British royal before her or since) had attended the annual affair. However, Diana’s slinky John Galliano for Dior dress made history as one of the most memorable looks to ever grace the famous steps at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (it even went on display in 2009 at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London).

For her part, Rodríguez, 31, entrusted the French luxury label Vetements with creating her custom look, which featured the same lace negligée-esque trim and languid silhouette.

Like Diana, Rodríguez’s own high-profile relationship with Portuguese soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo is what catapulted her onto the global stage. (The couple recently announced their engagement in April and share two children together: Alana Martina, 7, and Bella Esmerelda, 3.)

On Friday, March 1, the model walked the runway in the Vetements Womenswear Fall/Winter 2024-2025 show while her family proudly watched from the front row. Ronaldo, 39, and son Cristiano Jr, 13 […]

Since Rodríguez began dating Ronaldo in 2016, she has made a name for herself in fashion, working with designers including Gucci, Prada and Chanel. She also stars on the Netflix reality series I Am Georgina and has amassed over 66 million Instagram followers and counting.

Rodríguez’s decision to pay homage to Princess Diana’s Met Gala look could be seen as a savvy PR move to keep the spotlight on her red-carpet style. Notably, Rodríguez attended without her fiancé and instead arrived on the arm of Vetements designer Guram Gvasalia.

In Princess Diana’s case, her wardrobe had long been scrutinized, dictated by royal protocol and the weight of monarchy. However, those rules no longer applied following her recent divorce from King Charles in 1996, which became official four months prior to the night of the gala.

Princess Diana used the opportunity to serve the ultimate fashion flex by commissioning Galliano to create a custom version of a midnight-blue dress from his first collection for Dior.

Anwar Hussein/Getty Images Princess Diana had her own vision for the 1996 Met Gala. Maison Margiela creative director John Galliano opened up about designing Diana’s dress for Fashion’s Biggest Night during an episode of Hulu’s docuseries, In Vogue: The 90s, which is streaming now. “I remember one day we all jumped into this old van, […]

Galliano’s dress originally had a corset, but the designer recently revealed that Princess Diana altered it herself at the last minute without letting him know before she arrived at the museum.

“She’d ripped the corset out. She didn’t want to wear the corset,” because she “felt so liberated,” he said in the 2024 docuseries, In Vogue: The ’90s. “The dress was much more… sensuous.”

For her part, Rodríguez’s bespoke Vetements black satin slip was also one of the sexier looks on the 2025 Met Gala red carpet, as this year’s theme was inspired by menswear. However, the “Tailored for You” dress code also encouraged guests to embrace looks that reflected their style.

The spring 2025 costume exhibition celebrates refined tailoring and extravagant accessories, much like the sapphire-and-pearl choker Princess Diana wore to the Met Ball in 1996 and the massive canary-yellow diamond necklace by Chopard that Rodríguez donned on Monday night.

Rodríguez added another layer of grandeur to her gown with a long train. Considering Princess Diana famously chose a record-breaking train for her royal wedding in 1981, it’s safe to assume she’d approve of the alteration, which looked nothing short of regal on the Met Gala red carpet.
