Should AI give you a voice? Even when you’ve been murdered?

An AI avatar of a murder victim addressed his killer in court last week, and it may have been the first admittance of an AI-generated victim impact statement in a US court. Chris Pelkey, who was shot in a road rage incident in 2021, was recreated in a video made by his sister to offer forgiveness to his killer. This could mark the start of a new relationship between AI and the law, but will it change the relationship between us and the law? And what are the broader impacts we might see on our culture?

Brittany sits down with NPR digital news reporter Juliana Kim and Brandon Blankenship, assistant professor and director of the pre-law program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, to find out.

This episode was reported by Juliana Kim. It was produced by Liam McBain. It was edited by Neena Pathak. We had engineering support from David Greenburg. Our Supervising Producer is Barton Girdwood. Our Executive Producer is Veralyn Williams. Our VP of Programming is Yolanda Sangweni.

  • Xabi Alonso sets the record straight on the Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo debate

Xabi Alonso sets the record straight on the Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo debate

The debate over who reigns supreme in soccer—Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo—has been ongoing since the two burst onto the global stage. Adding his perspective, Xabi Alonso, the Spanish legend set to take over as Real Madrid’s head coach, shared his thoughts.

Messi and Ronaldo have dominated an era of soccer and are widely regarded as two of the greatest players of all time. For Alonso, however, the answer is clear. He has consistently chosen Ronaldo as the best, saying in a 2014 interview with the Daily Mail, “Cristiano is the best footballer I have ever played with”.

That year, Ronaldo captured the Ballon d’Or, and Alonso, who was then playing for Bayern Munich, called the award “deserved,” even as Germany celebrated its World Cup win. “If Neuer or another German player had won the Ballon d’Or, it would have been fair—they won the World Cup. But I also say that if Cristiano Ronaldo takes it, it’s fair too. He had an incredible season and won the Champions League”.

Alonso doubled down on his opinion after his retirement in 2017. Speaking to Bodegas Beronia, he reaffirmed, “The best of all time? The usual suspects: Cristiano or Messi. But because he was my teammate, [I pick] Cristiano.

    Champions League glory with Ronaldo

Alonso and Ronaldo were two marquee signings by Real Madrid ahead of the 2009 season. The club’s goal was to finally secure the elusive 10th Champions League trophy.

The dream became reality in the 2013-14 season, with both Alonso and Cristiano Ronaldo playing pivotal roles in the triumph. Together, they also won two Copa del Rey titles, one La Liga championship, and a Spanish Super Cup. Alonso left Madrid after that season to join Bayern Munich, where he eventually retired in 2017 to begin his coaching career.

Alonso’s Messi comparison for Florian Wirtz

Currently managing Bayer Leverkusen, Alonso has been guiding several rising stars, including German prodigy Florian Wirtz. In an interview with Süddeutsche Zeitung, Alonso drew parallels between Wirtz and Messi, praising Wirtz’s understanding of the game.

Messi is so good because he knows how and when to make the right passes,” Alonso explained. “It’s not about making the most spectacular move but the smartest and most effective one. Florian can do that too. That’s why he’s so good”.

  • 3 US Artificial Intelligence Growth Stocks That Can Power Your Portfolio Higher

3 US Artificial Intelligence Growth Stocks That Can Power Your Portfolio Higher

Artificial intelligence, or AI, has been a game-changer.

AI is responsible for making our lives easier by automating tasks, making search easier, and allowing for more intuitive, natural responses to queries.

This new technology has an impact not just on individuals, but has been harnessed by many corporations to improve their analytics capabilities and enhance their cloud platforms.

Generative AI, which relies on large language models (LLMs), has also changed the way we interact and communicate.

More businesses are now deploying AI agents, also known as agentic AI, to help sift through mountains of data and personalise queries and preferences for their customers.

With AI proving to be a formidable driving force, here are three growth stocks that can allow you to ride on this trend.

    Palantir (NASDAQ: PLTR)

Palantir is a software company utilising AI to power big data analytics.

The company operates a platform that allows organisations to integrate, analyse, and utilise and make sense of vast amounts of data to draw insights.

Palantir reported a robust performance for the first quarter of 2025 (1Q 2025).

Revenue climbed 39.3% year on year to US$883.9 million and operating profit more than doubled year on year from US$80.9 million to US$176 million.

Net profit stood at US$213 million, up 103% year on year.

The business also churned out free cash flow of US$304.1 million, up nearly 140% year on year.

Management is optimistic about 2025 and raised the company’s revenue guidance to between US$3.89 billion to US$3.92 billion (previous forecast: US$3.74 billion to US$3.757 billion).

Free cash flow for this year is projected to come in between US$1.6 billion to US$1.8 billion.

The company closed 139 deals of at least US$1 million during the quarter, with 31 deals exceeding US$10 million each.

Palantir’s total customer count has grown by 39% year on year to 769 for 1Q 2025, and its total commercial customers has shot up 46% year on year to 622.

    Innodata (NASDAQ: INOD)

Innodata is a data engineering company helping to drive the adoption of generative AI and spearhead AI innovation.

The company provides a range of solutions, platforms, and services for generative AI and AI builders and adopters.

Innodata reported an impressive 1Q 2025 with revenue leaping 120.1% year on year to US$58.3 million.

Net profit soared more than sevenfold year on year from US$989,000 to US$7.8 million.

The business also generated a positive free cash flow of US$17.5 million for the quarter, more than triple the US$5.4 million churned out a year ago.

Innodata is expanding its relationship with existing customers that could result in the award of more than US$30 million in contracts in the near term.

Management is also onboarding a number of potentially significant customers and plans to invest in targeted technologies to support current and prospective customers in their AI journeys.

The company expects to chalk up revenue growth of 40% or more for 2025.

Two months ago in March, Innodata announced the beta launch of its generative AI test and evaluation platform powered by Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) advanced inference technology.

Management believes that generative AI is set to become the next-generation computation platform, and that the addressable market opportunity will grow by 42% per annum from just US$217 billion in 2025 to US$1.3 trillion by 2032.

    Verint Systems (NASDAQ: VRNT)

Verint Systems provides actionable solutions and services by harnessing AI and focuses on customer experience (CX) automation, cyber intelligence, and business analytics.

The company reported a commendable set of earnings for its fiscal 2025 (FY2025) ending 31 January 2025.

Revenue stayed flat year on year at US$909.2 million but operating profit surged 56% year on year to US$106.4 million.

Net profit more than tripled year on year to US$65 million.

The business also generated a positive free cash flow of US$129.9 million for FY2025, up 4% year on year.

Healthy AI momentum drove record bookings for Verint as it saw software-as-a-service annual contract value (ACV) bookings from new deals climb 30% year on year.

Subscription annual recurring revenue (ARR) for FY2026 is expected to grow around 8% year on year.

Verint is seeing increasing AI consumption from its customers, with Woolworths (ASX: WOW) expanding its Verint bots from one to six business units.

For AXA Insurance, the business has expanded its existing bots from 100 to 500 licences and plans to grow this to 1,700 licences by the first half of this year.

Management believes that Verint’s long-term growth opportunity remains significant.

There will be US$2 trillion spent to shift manual labour to AI to help automate CX workflows.

The market is in the early stages of doing so and the company is well-positioned for this shift and targeting long-term double-digit ARR growth.

Generative AI is reshaping the stock market, but not in the way most investors think. It’s not just about which companies are using AI. It’s about how they’re using it to unlock new revenue, dominate their markets, and quietly reshape the business world. Cristiano Ronaldo‘s mother proudly watched on from the sidelines as her grandson warmed up before being named on the bench for Portugal’s U15s clash against Japan on Tuesday.

Cristiano Ronaldo Jr trained with Portugal’s youth ranks for the first time this week and will hope to come on to make his first appearance for the U15s side in Croatia.

The 14-year-old youngster, who plays for the youth academy of his father’s Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr, is eligible to represent a host of nations including Spain and the USA.

Although he will not officially commit his future to a country until he makes a senior appearance at international level, it looks as though Ronaldo Jr is favouring Portugal after being called up for their youth side, following in his father’s footsteps.

Manchester United and Real Madrid legend Ronaldo, 40, represented the Portugal U15s on nine occasions in 2001 before quickly accelerating through the youth ranks.

He went on to become Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer with 136 goals from 219 appearances, winning the European Championship in 2016 and Nations League in 2019.

Keen to witness her family continue the legacy, Ronaldo’s mother Maria Dolores watched on from the sidelines as her grandson geared up for the match, which is part of the Vlatko Markovic tournament staged in Croatia.

Smiling as he trained and warmed up with team-mates, she was pictured sporting Ronaldo’s iconic 2010 World Cup jersey.

With the Al-Nassr superstar set to retire in the next few years, there will be plenty of pressure on Ronaldo Jr’s shoulders to follow in his father’s footsteps once the baton is passed over fully.

The young striker, affectionally known as Cristianinho, was one of 22 teenagers who were listed to feature at the tournament by manager Joao Santos.

During an earlier training session with Portugal’s U15s this week, Ronaldo Jr was spotted wearing CR7 Nike Mercurials as well as Kylian Mbappe’s latest Nike boots.

Before impressing at Al-Nassr, the 14-year-old was previously a part of the youth academies at Real Madrid, Juventus and Manchester United — all of his father’s former teams.

Despite turning 40 in February, the Ballon d’Or winner has admitted in the past he would like to play on the same pitch as his son.

The veteran player said recently: ‘I would like it, I would like it. It’s not something that keeps me awake at night but we’ll see.’

He added: ‘ It’s more in his hands than mine. The years are starting to go by and one day I’ll have to let it go. There will come a time when it is no longer possible. Not only physically but also psychologically.’

Speaking about his son’s footballing future to Portuguese newspaper Record he added: ‘He will follow his path, his career. I will be a proud father, I will be proud of what he wants to do.

‘If he plays, ‘top’. If he doesn’t play, we tried. At least his father tried. But it won’t be a problem either, in my opinion.’

Police fabricated legal clause with AI, judge finds – Israel news

The Hadera Magistrate’s Court ruled last week that the police had fabricated a legal clause using artificial intelligence.

During an investigation carried out by Lahav 433, police confiscated a suspect’s mobile phone.

The suspect subsequently opposed the move and requested, through attorneys Tamir Calderon and Rami Zoabi from the law firm Doron Tikotzky & Co., to have the device returned to him.

The police objected, citing a legal clause that does not exist and was instead generated with the help of artificial intelligence.

    ‘Doesn’t exist in anyone’s imagination’

“The law does not exist in the statute books of the State of Israel, nor does it exist in anyone’s imagination—it was created by artificial intelligence,” said Judge Ohad Kaplan.

“If I thought I’d seen it all in the 30 years I’ve been on the bench, I was apparently mistaken.” It should be noted that the police admitted the mistake at the start of the hearing.

According to Ynet, the police representative admitted the error. “We retract our claim. What was quoted is incorrect. The person who wrote it did so in good faith, by mistake. We acknowledge that an error was made.”

Not Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo: Lionel Scaloni names his top 3 players in the world

For nearly two decades, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have dominated the debate over who is the best soccer player in the world. But with both legends now in the twilight of their careers, new names have started to take center stage. In a recent interview, Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni revealed his current top three players—and neither Messi nor Ronaldo made the cut.

With both stars now outside of Europe’s top leagues, fans and analysts alike have begun shifting their attention to a new generation of talent. During a conversation with Spanish journalist Siro Lopez, Scaloni was asked to name his three best players in the world right now. His answer sparked headlines.

Kylian Mbappe, Lamine Yamal, and the third one could be one of ours. It could be Julian Alvarez or Lautaro Martinez,” Scaloni said. While Mbappe and the 17-year-old Yamal were quick picks, the third spot appeared more difficult for the coach to finalize.

López even suggested adding Messi to round out the list, but Scaloni decided to keep the discussion focused on the present: “We don’t put Leo in the discussion because it’s tiresome,” he responded, explaining his choice to highlight emerging talent over familiar answers.

Scaloni has repeatedly expressed admiration for Messi—calling him the greatest player in history, even above Diego Maradona. But when it comes to discussing today’s top performers, the coach acknowledged it’s time to shift the spotlight away from both Messi and Ronaldo.

Now 46, Lionel Scaloni has had the rare privilege of playing with and against many of the game’s all-time greats. When asked to name his historic dream XI—including players he’s played with, against, or simply admired—the Argentina boss didn’t hesitate to bring legends back into the conversation.

For goalkeeper, he selected Gianluigi Buffon. His back line included Cafu, Alessandro Nesta, Noureddine Naybet (a former teammate), and Paolo Maldini. In midfield, he named Mauro Silva (another former teammate), along with Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez.

Up front, Scaloni returned to familiar icons: Lionel Messi and Brazilian Ronaldo were his first two picks, followed by Cristiano Ronaldo—finally giving both modern legends a place, albeit in his all-time XI rather than his current top three.
